Despite being a mouthful! NLP is a sophisticated area of applied psychology that covers modelling, techniques and strategies that help us understand & change human behaviour, both in our relationships with self and others, in order to bring about positive outcomes.
This area of study was created in 1970s USA when Richard Bandler (psychology & philosophy graduate) and John Grinder (linguistic professor) modelled the works of a lot of the earlier psychology that had come before them.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based psychological therapy that focuses on the connection between thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviours. It is based on the idea that the way we interpret situations can strongly influence how we feel and how we act, and that unhelpful patterns can be identified and changed.
Humanistic therapy is a relational, person-centred approach to psychological therapy that focuses on the individual’s capacity for growth, self-understanding, and change. It is grounded in the belief that people have an innate drive towards psychological wellbeing, and that difficulties can arise when this natural process is blocked by life experiences, relationships, or internalised expectations.
